Abstract
Viral hepatitis remains a major worldwide public health problem. Epidemiologic and laboratory investigations indicate that 2 specific viruses are involved in this disease. The epidemiologic distinctiveness of these 2 viruses has recently been challenged. Viral hepatitis A transmitted primarily by the fecal-oral route, is also transmitted by the parenteral route. Viral hepatitis B occurs sporadically following parenteral inoculation of virus-infected blood products, although recently have demonstrated that oral transmission can also occur. Prevalence of Hepatitis B antigen (HB Ag) in blood donor was investigated and the results are followings. 1. 5% of 9,372 sera from paid blood donors of Korea University Hospital blood bank from January 1975 to May 1977 was HB Ag positive. 2. Distribution of Hepatitis B antigen in the blood donors by months for 2 years and a half period was high in September, October, November. This phenomena may interpreted that most oil them were infected from Hepatitis B virus in summer.
